Car Accident – Snow and Ice

New England winters mean ice and snow on roads, which in turn lead to poor road conditions.  However, negligence and recklessness are usually the main causes to car crashes in snow and ice.

More than 1,300 people die each year in car accidents during times of winter related inclement weather, according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Another 116,800 people suffer personal injury. The FHWA states that 24% of car crashes caused by adverse weather conditions occur on pavement covered by snow and/or ice.  The FHWA also states that 15% of accidents occur while snow or sleet is still falling. Winter driving car accident statistics illustrate the need for driver’s to take added precautions.

Most drivers know to slow down and leave more room between vehicles in adverse weather. But others just don’t get it and drive with no very little concern about the safety of others.  When a driver causes an accident resulting in injury or death because they failed to take reasonable precaution in snow and ice, they can be held legally accountable.
